For a year where we felt we didn’t get as much walking in as we’d like, we still clocked up a respectable 312 miles. Although nearly a third of them were contributed by our week on the South West Coast path (more on that later).
Early on in the year the walking was mostly close to home, as the the trains were a mess with a lot of weekend maintenance, we did fit in a rather fun ‘off-beat’ walk around interesting areas of London though.
The spring saw us get a bit more adventurous, covering some TimeOut and homemade walks including: along the South Downs Way from Hassocks to Lewes; edge of London Riddlesdown to Coulsdon and from Guildford to the National Trust Clandon Park and back.
We then settled on a plan of doing the next stretch of the South West Coast path, probably the most strenuous week of the entire path. So we spent each June weekend doing laps of the Box Hill Hike, the nearest thing we could find to a Cornish Coast simulator.
And then we made the escape to Devon/Cornwall for several days of excellent walking:
Westward Ho! to Clovelly
Clovelly to Hartland Quay
Clovelly to Bude
Bude to Crackington Haven
Crackington Haven to Tintagel
Tintagel to Port Isaac
Port Isaac to Padstow
After this highlight we unfortunately struggled to get back into our stride again, with lots of work, education and other commitments getting in the way of our walking. One notable exception was following the Basingstoke canal and the Wey navigation from West Byfleet to Hampton Court, and another entertaining London exploration, this time in the City/London Wall area.
