With most of the countryside submerged, we hit upon a contingency plan of walking in the city. Helen has book of off-beat London walks, from which we managed to string four together It turns out to be a very interesting experience, trying to see places that we’re not familiar with, including a lot of blue plaques.
Firstly around the riches of the west-end, with Mayfair and Grosvenor Square, then across through fashionable Carnaby Street and the now trendy Soho, to the legal Lincolns Inn.
From there we worked our way along and around Fleet Street, and then across Ludgate, to the area once owned by the Black Friars around Carter Lane.
Among the many things we saw were: Dr Johnson’s house, the office where Skynet Applied Systems are based, a bolt of lighting while crossing the Thames, a £69,000 chandelier for sale, massive china elephants that weren’t for sale, a woman taking photos inside all the bins in Golden Square, and a statue of a cat called Hodge. Oh and we got food from an Indian Burrito place (as you do). In the words of Dr Johnson, “when a man is tired of London he is tired of life”
