Walk This Way

Kris Coverdale's walking diary

Wirral Peninsula

December 26, 2013

Boxing day afternoon and a brief respite appeared in the stormy weather that had been battering the UK. We seized the opportunity and headed out to the end of the Wirral peninsula to walk its width (more or less).

We set out from Wallasey, near Harrison Park, and followed the prom. We weren’t the only ones with the same idea and were accompanied with a fleet of new scooters, bikes, radio controlled cars and over-excited dogs, all relishing the first time out of the house in a few days. Fairly soon we passed by Leasowe lighthouse, no longer in use, but built in 1763 it is the oldest brick built lighthouse in Britain. You can also check out the view from the webcam at the top. Birds were also out in force, most notably on the beach we saw a Little Egret and several Oyster Catchers.

At Hoylake we stopped to admire the Grace Darling a small pirate ship, made from driftwood for the Wirral Festival of Firsts. We then passed through Hoylake and onto the beach, the sun low in the sky giving wonderful reflections from the wet sand.

As we rounded the end of the peninsula at Red Rocks, I would have liked to have struck out for Hilbre Island. This would have been foolish however as the route from here is closed due to treacherous tides and quicksand. The correct approach is from West Kirby round the islands of Little Eye and Middle Eye (see Friends of Hilbre for full details), so I’ll have to save that for another occasion.

Finally we approached West Kirby as the sun was going down, enjoying excellent views across the Dee to North Wales.
