We decided it was time for another ‘weekend’ national trail and set out to do stretches of the North Downs way as and when we have time. And so a mild November morning saw us starting out from Farnham for the first 10 miles or so. A pleasant first stretch, mainly woodland and fields, quite often passing by golf courses as well, with the occasional bit of road walking. The walk alongside the River Wey just outside Guildford was very good too – along Shalford Watermeadows (a old form of intensive farming involving flooding the field in the winter and then draining in the spring). Without a guidebook or map we did pretty well although we struggled to find the ‘Wey’ when there was a sudden absence of signs. All in all a good start, looking forward to continuing sometime soon.
